NATURIST SOUTHERN GATHERING

By LSM
Special to Pasco Naturally

The Naturist Society came to Pasco County this year and presented the Southern Gathering. The weather was perfect. Lake Como was in prime condition and the attendees were excited to be here.

Since the Naturist Society only chooses to hold four Gatherings per year, Lake Como was honored to be chosen for this national event.

There were 128 people involved with the Southern Gathering over the four-day event at Lake Como, not counting the people of Lake Como who ventured out of their homes to participate.

Fourteen vendors came to offer things like body casting, music, literature, massage and jewelry.

The various naturist clubs and organizations set up booths to insure that folks understand the growth and importance of the particular area they represent.

People came from as far away as California and Oregon to attend the 80 workshops conducted on a variety of subject matters.

We took nature walks with experts who told us what each plant is, identified star constellations, did relationship building, watched movies, learned about nudist history. We learned how to sail, learned of new places to go naked, wrote stories, told stories, danced around the fire and learned about our inner child again.

We spoke of spiritual needs, learned some things about cameras, learned how to change the laws on nudity, listened to some beautiful music and perhaps made some. Mostly we learned about ourselves and we improved at least a little.

We hugged our old friends and made some new ones.

There was a musical show by Faire Elaine Silver on Friday night and a popera (the combination of opera and pop) music show by Armand and Angelina on Saturday night to a filled venue.

Our Sunday morning worship service was magical and well attended. Two successful drum circles were held complete with about eight drums and four naked dancers.

The great marshmallow fight was held on Sunday morning with some very funny results. Poolside entertainment was provided on Sunday afternoon and was very popular with both the Naturist Society members and Lake Como members who showed enthusiasm for the heavenly sounds tickling their eardrums.

The restaurant was very busy each day and everywhere I looked there was a smile. This event was a success.

The emotions of the closing circle were amazing and real.

Without the many volunteers and cooperation from the Naturist Society and Lake Como, this event would not have happened.

And many thanks go out to everyone who had a hand in making this the wonderful event that it was.

Attendees were happily surprised at the quality of the programs, which were presented during the Southern Gathering.

I thank all of you for the opportunity to serve Lake Como and the Naturist Society as the coordinator for this special event. And I invite any and all of you to attend the next Gathering wherever it is held in our wonderful country.

For those of you who may have missed our debut issue in Park News, let us introduce ourselves. Florida Day Tours showcases the best that Florida has to offer and prides itself on finding the hidden jewels that make living in Florida all worthwhile. Bill Murphy is the former TV personality from Channel 10 “Murphy in the Morning,” former morning anchor on Channel 13 and on air host and author of the No. 1 selling book, “One Tank Trips.” He will be personally hosting each tour. With more than 150 trip locations under his belt, there is no better guide to have along on a day trip.

With each new bend of the road, we find more and more sights to see and stories to tell. Each season in Florida brings many one-of-a-kind adventures, and we try to make sure you have a chance to get out and enjoy the amazing sights that are all around us.

In December, there are many places to explore whether you join us on our day tours or gather up a bunch of friends, jump in the car and head out to make your own adventure.

First off, this is the perfect time to head to historic Brooksville and spend the day at Roger’s Christmas Village. You will enjoy an enchanting village comprised of five turn-of-the-century houses filled with an array of gifts for all occasions. Stroll through the beautiful gardens as you visit each of the decorated houses and browse the large selection of collectibles, ornaments and gifts. Then enjoy lunch at the two-time winner of Southern Living’s Readers Choice Award for Best Small Town Restaurant — Maille Kyla’s Café. The tour date is Monday, Nov. 24.

Then, it’s “Once Upon a Time… In Bok.” Experience the winter wonderland of a transformed former winter retreat at the Bok Sanctuary in Lake Wales. Take a look as Pinewood Estates, a 1930s Mediterranean style mansion, becomes “Once upon a time…A Storybook Christmas.” Each room of this beautiful estate is transformed into a magnificent display of Christmas designed by decorators from across the country. Then, spend some time in Bok Sanctuary, an historic landmark featuring sprawling gardens with a 205-foot Gothic and Art Deco Bell Carillon tower. Enjoy a specialty lunch in the gardens while listening to the “Singing Tower” play holiday favorites. The tour date is Tuesday, Dec. 2.

For those who really miss the cold up north, you can enjoy a Florida winter wonderland unlike any other in the state. The prestigious Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee will be transformed into an ice village, with unforgettable life-sized nativity and frosty igloos. Frozen within these unique sculptures are twinkling lights that create an ever-changing luminescence. The “ICE” Exhibit is maintained at a chilly 9 degrees Fahrenheit (fortunately, warm hooded parkas are provided). This truly is an amazing sight and a great way to celebrate the holiday season. While there, enjoy a one-of-a-kind luncheon buffet at “Villa de Flora.” This can’t be missed. Once you have finished an amazing meal, spend the rest of your day exploring lost cities, party in Key West, get lost in a rainforest, and explore the ruins of a castle, all at the Gaylord Palms, with an atrium larger than Wrigley Field. The tour date is Thursday, Dec. 4.

We hope that this sparks your interest in the many adventures you can enjoy in this beautiful place we call Florida. Feel free to join us on a hosted tour or head out with friends and family and enjoy an amazing day.

Paradise Pines Fest 2008
on November 10 2008

Paradise Pines’ John and Gigi present $250 to Morris Hintzman of Hope Lives
John and Gigi went to the Metropolitan Ministries Hope Lives donation center to deliver the checks from the Paradise Pines RV Park fundraiser and from their sponsors.

“We were met by Morris Hintzman, the president for 35 years of the organization,” says John.

“I cannot begin to tell you how humbled we were by the magnitude of how this organization helps those in need. The place was huge with almost 1500 volunteers from all walks of life. Without volunteers, this operation would not be possible,” he said.

“They still can use help during the week like taking in donations, or serving food during the meal times. They have a full time facility that houses 45 families and they estimate to feed 30,000 during the holidays, which is up over 5000 from last year due to the economic crisis,” John said.

“It warms our hearts to be able to present this donation to Hope Lives, and we hope that you will find it your own hearts to take time out to give back a little, or like the movie say's ‘pay it forward.’”

Bringing all of the nudist communities together for a great cause
By John & Gigi
Special to Pasco Naturally

With temperatures hovering just over the freezing point, I began to wish for summer again as I shined up the big yellow trike for the day’s Poker Run. Here it is, before 7 a.m., and not only am I up, but going full speed.

We moved tables, hauled firewood, hung decorations, rigged up the rental light tower, and now my @*@** bike won’t start.

After a slight delay and jump-start from a trusty friend, we are on our way to a Land O’ Lakes restaurant for our very first Paradise Pines Poker Run.

Even though the temps were chilly, the brave came out to support us. We wandered all over the beautiful back roads of Pasco County stopping at several Beef ‘O’ Brady’s along the way. We logged 100 miles on our bikes when we rolled back into Paradise Pines late Wednesday afternoon.

We started this event to bring awareness to our park, have a little fun, and to meet a goal of feeding a hundred hungry or homeless people for Thanksgiving.

We had an outpouring of support from the local community with our sponsors:

--PascoNaturally.com

--Sunbathersclubs.com

--BareBunsBikers.com

--Tampa V-Twin

--Sapphire Exotic Creations

Our residents also came out to help with their checkbooks and their sweat. Without the generosity of our sponsors and residents, we would not have been able to achieve the objective of bringing all of the nudist communities together in one place at one time.

Gigi, Ron and Phalcon slaved over the grills and ovens cooking sauce and pasta and getting the canvas set for the evening’s events.

We sold over 85 meals and hosted close to 200 guests from the local resorts and communities.

Kenny and Leslie plugged in the guitars and microphones. They opened up with a great set of tunes for the big spaghetti dinner. We even had enough food for extra helpings. People mingled, friends caught up on old times, topics ranged from the weather to politics, and lots of laughter ensued, including all the Obama and McCain banter.

After the grazing was complete, Bob and the boys of the Barefoot Band cranked up the amps and the party began. New and old tunes alike got the crowd up on their feet dancing under the stars.

With temperatures dipping down faster than the setting sun, friends and neighbors huddled around the campfires and sang along with songs we all know and love. Lots of folks even stayed to help with the cleanup afterwards.

It warms our hearts here at Paradise Pines as we reflect upon the day’s events. With pride we salute all of you for helping to make this event more successful than we had ever imagined.

As we enter the holiday season and our winter friends return, take a moment and vision what YOU have to be thankful for.

Pam and Harley love Paradise Pines RV Park
on November 10 2008

Pam and Harley have lived at Paradise Pines since the end of July and love it! They hope to stay for a long time.

Harley is an AKC Cocker Spaniel. He will be two-years-old at the end of February.

His nickname in the park is Houdini That’s because the first day they moved in, Harley managed to open the door and go visiting about four times.

“I have tried several times to secure my door to keep him in and he has managed to get out every time,” says Pam.

“He is a social butterfly and loves to go visit the other dogs and people in the park. Harley hasn’t found anyone that he doesn't like. I think he is looking for a daddy with a pet.”

Pam has been a nudist since the late 1970s and is currently a member of Paradise Lakes and recently to Caliente. She enjoys playing water volleyball at Paradise, Texas Hold ‘em and dancing in the club and on occasion playing pool.

Pam was formerly a photojournalist for Dixie Biker magazine and is currently looking for a cleaning job or two.

The Hopeful Hikers 5th highest fundraising, #1 power team

We’ve done it. The Hopeful Hikers walked the 3-Day 60-mile walk Halloween weekend and there were no tricks.

The weather conditions were a wonderful treat as was every person who came out to cheer us on. They were just not cheerleaders; they were there to thank us for raising the funds that will help to bring about the cure of breast cancer. The walk started in Ft. Desoto and ended at Spa Beach in St. Pete.

I am so proud of my team of eight. Our fundraising netted breast cancer $57,000 of the $4.5 million raised by all the teams in the walk.

The Hopeful Hikers were the fifth highest fundraising team in the 3-Day. However, the teams above us had many more members. So the 3-Day had a special reward for us.

The Hopeful Hikers were recognized as the #1 power team on Friday evening in front of all the walkers. The average raised by each member of our team was $7,001.

Congratulations to Doug Butler and Hilda Holt for each raising over $10,000.

We are very proud of what we have done and so thankful to all those personal friends, business friends and friends in our communities including The Groves and Caliente who supported us by giving both donations, time and support.

I urge anyone who might be interested in doing the 3-Day in the future to contact me at jhhh1@tampabay.rr.com and I will give you information, help and encouragement. Doing the walk is an amazingly emotional, life-changing journey.

Fairwind Lakes Naturist Park now free and clear
on November 10 2008

By Michael Thompson
Special to Pasco Naturally

The US Bankruptcy Court in Tampa has now signed off on all known matters between the former Florida Naturist Park that is now known as Fairwind Lakes, Karl Thomas and Bill Martin/Natura.

The park has been returned to its rightful owner. And further all Mr. Thomas’s properties have been returned to him.

The development of the park is now continuing and properties that were frozen while Mr. Martin spun his web are now back up for sale.

Fairwind Lakes is a 120-acre residential naturist community with a beach club and is 50 years old. There are approximately 240 platted private building lots. However, that number will most likely be brought up to somewhere near 300.

Within the Park's boundaries are three small lakes. On one of the lakes is a beach club with a clubhouse, BBQ area, social fire area and beach area. The other lakes are primitive right now.

The residents of the Park strive to keep the subdivision as natural as possible. There are hundreds of huge old Florida Live Oak trees. Roadways are maintained but unpaved.

There is no way to express the immense damage that this debacle has caused to the reputation of naturism.

There is a way to express thanks to all the naturists who got behind the ugly ”Christian” siege that Bill Martin/Natura and their merry band of crusaders engaged in. It was a five and a half year struggle.
Perhaps even lesser in stature from when the assault began, if that is at all possible.

We can give no thanks to the American Association for Nude Recreation who did nothing but run and hide while the Bill Martin/Natura assault on naturism took place. We wish to extend all the very best to The Naturist Society who constantly showed they not only talk the talk but that they walk the walk when it comes to doing the right thing.

We highly recommend The Naturist Society.

Those who got involved looked into the truth and made their voices heard on controversial matters in dispute are standing very tall in the world of naturism right now.

Our special thanks and very large debt of gratitude for all the help and guidance so unselfishly extended go especially to Cyndiann Phillips, Karl Thomas, Vivian and Tim Beilski, Nanette Wynn, Richard C., Cheri Alexander, Carole Davidson, the people at Clothes Free and several others who asked not to be mentioned by name because of their positions and being subject to more frivolous litigation.

Further thanks go to the active residents of Fairwind Lakes who spent untold hours and money in dealing with Bill Martin/Natura. You know who you are and have clearly shown that you are one tough bunch to deal with when needlessly angered.

I am personally deeply humbled by the sacrifice and assistance from all those mentioned above.

Ever so respectfully, and in solidarity to now move forward in furthering the wonderful world of naturism.

Nudist polling place request ‘some marketing hype,’ says Pasco elections chief
on November 10 2008

By Joe Potter
Staff Writer

LAND O’ LAKES — A request for a voting precinct for nudists was likely a publicity stunt by Caliente Resorts, Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Brian E. Corley said recently.

The request was reportedly made by nudists at Caliente Resorts, one of the better known clothing optional resorts in the United States.

Caliente is one of approximately 14 nudist or clothing optional communities in Land O’ Lakes. Between 5,000 and 10,000 people in Land O’ Lakes identify themselves as nudists, the largest community in North America.

Corley was unavailable at press time Friday, Nov. 7. He was said to working with a canvassing board to certify Pasco County’s elections tallies from the Nov. 4 general election.

Corley previously said he thought Caliente was “just doing some marketing hype” when he heard about the request a few weeks prior to the Nov. 4 election.

There was not enough time to set up a new voting precinct before the Nov. 4 election, and it would be difficult to even set one up before 2010, Corley told the St. Petersburg Times in an article published Oct. 31.

It is his preference to not create new voting precincts outside of the reapportionment that is done every 10 years, Corley reportedly said.

The next reapportionment is scheduled for 2012.

Pasco County Commissioners would have to approve the creation of a new voting precinct, according to Corley.

State law reportedly does not prohibit a nudist polling place.

Corley told the Times he was not in favor of what Caliente had requested.

Caliente residents now cast their ballots at The Groves clubhouse a popular 50+ community, about two miles north of the resort.

Caliente is located within County Commissioner Pat Mulieri’s district.

Mulieri said other options were available, including casting absentee ballots. Also, Mulieri said, it would cost money to establish a new precinct, and there would have to be a good reason to do so.

The Caliente idea may have been inspired by comments made earlier by Corley himself.

“Vote in the comfort of your own home. It’s the one way you can vote naked,” Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Brian E. Corley said Oct. 8. He was speaking at the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon.

Corley was discussing the ability of any registered voter in Pasco County to request an absentee ballot. The absentee ballot can be filled out at home and mailed back to the Supervisor of Elections office. Corley’s remarks, delivered within a stone’s throw of several nudist communities in Nudist Pasco, drew laughter from the nearly 100 people attending the chamber luncheon.

Corley was re-elected to the job he was appointed to by Gov. Charlie Crist after edging his opponent Pat Carroll of Wesley Chapel.

This Week's Mystery Nudist is:
on November 10 2008

This Week's Mystery Nudist is:

Cari Lynn Floyd, formerly known as Carol Floyd.

Cari was a member of Paradise Lakes in 1981 before it was actually open. She and the first mystery nudist Kathy Randolph and Jack Gipson were also there. In fact, she advised Jack to purchase his first condo.

While waiting for their townhouses to be completed she and Jack bought and moved into vacation condos in F and G buildings. It was a good thing they bought because the "6 months completion time" turned into 3 years! Thanks, Cari.

Cari, who was teaching at the time, had some interesting experiences trying to keep word of where she lived from her employer and students. Times were different then and she didn't know how the school board would react. There was one student who actually said, "Miss Floyd, I know where you live. But don't worry, I won't tell anybody." And he didn't!

Even though she loved teaching, she was able to retire from the profession. She got involved in the mortgage business, real estate ownership and sales and pursued some of her passions, including photography, travel and home design.

In addition to business, she has been able to travel and photograph many countries all over the world.

From that little vacation condo she designed and lived in one of the townhouses. Remember the spiral staircase?

Then Cari designed and built a beautiful home in Paradise.

She and Avery are currently waiting for the completion of their dream home in Caliente, which she also designed. Cari is overseeing the building and designing the interior, as well as landscaping their new home.

Truly a talented lady and good friend to many long-time and new nudists all over Pasco and the world, we salute Cari Lynn Floyd as our third Mystery Nudist.

Did you guess who she was from the front page photo taken in 1983?
